We are pleased to announce that our contribution titled “Holistic Modeling and Control of Mobile Robot Applications within 5G-ORAN Networks” has been accepted for presentation at the IEEE ETFA Conference! This presentation will take place from September 10 to 13 in Italy. For more information, please visit the conference website https://2024.ieee-etfa.orgAuthors:Jan Nouruzi-Pur (Gestalt Robotics)
Jens Lambrecht (Gestalt Robotics)
Axel Vick (Fraunhofer IPK)
Adam Girycki (IS-Wireless)
Ernst-Joachim Steffens (EJS Industrie 4.0)Summary of our work: Controlling mobile robots from remote servers offers numerous advantages in industrial applications, such as centralized decision-making and high availability of hardware. However, the QoS of outsourced controls is heavily influenced by the state of the communication infrastructure. When robot applications are allowed to gain insights into and control these states, performance can be significantly improved. Programmable, standardized 5G O-RAN network controllers that operate in near real-time enable application domains to access network-specific metrics and control parameters. Our proposal: We propose a solution where multiple robots are connected via 5G O-RAN to a common robotic application framework that is capable of relaying network performance metrics and managing the usage of network resources. This new component enables mobile robotic applications to optimize their behavior based on network conditions. Results: The system was evaluated in a simulated environment where the necessary navigation computations can be performed either on the local hardware of the mobile robot or on a more powerful remote hardware. The results show improved performance in the case of network-based navigation and further improvements when the QoS of the agent is prioritized.#5G #ORAN #MobileRobots #IndustrialAutomation #Research #ETFA2024
